This year's trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast was my third year going on a Alternative Spring Break trip. In comparison to the other 2 places I have been in the past 2 years, this trip has far exceeded both of them. The devastation that Hurricane Katrina brought to the Mississippi Gulf Coast was unbelievable and will most likely be ingrained in my mind for a long time. I never thought I could see such devastation but to help people who experienced that first hand was an amazing opportunity that will not be forgotten. Helping to build the house along with the others in my group was amazing and it was amazing to see how much can get accomplished in such a short period of time. This trip has also taught me a lot about myself. After each workday, our group had reflections or devotions where we would reflect on the workday or a certain aspect of our experience. This made us think about things other than being here to build a house. I learned not to judge others by how they live but by who they are. By coming down here, seeing the area first hand, and helping others rebuild it, has made me realize the power of the human spirit. It was such an unforgettable experience that I along with 3 others are coming down again in May to build again!
